Man charged over officer attack

A man accused of attacking a police officer with a bottle at a south London funfair has been remanded in custody by magistrates.

Tony Bull, 23, appeared at Sutton Magistrates' Court charged with attempted grievous bodily harm after the incident in Carshalton.

The victim of the attack on Sunday evening was an officer from Sutton's Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

Suspension of two Surrey Police officers

Sir Paul Stephenson: police are failing the public on organised crime

PoliceNews The new Commissioner said the issue had to return to the political agenda because not enough progress had been made against crime gangs that cost the nation an estimated £40 billion a year.

“I am disappointed with the progress – or lack of progress – made since 2003 to impact significantly organised crime in the United Kingdom,” he said.

His research suggests that only six per cent of organised crime gangs have been disrupted by the “Police Service Plc” – all forces.

Former paratrooper becomes Scotland's first trans police officer

PoliceNews A trans woman who successfully won a sex discrimination case against the Army has been accepted by Strathclyde Police as a trainee constable.

Jan Hamilton, formerly known as Ian, served in the Army for 20 years until 2007 when she began gender reassignment.

She took the Army to an industrial tribunal on grounds of sex discrimination for its refusal to acknowledge her as a legal woman.
