Police are continuing to question two people after a shooting in Newcastle.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital suffering from what is believed to be a gunshot wound to his leg, his condition is not life threatening.

During the night two people were arrested, a 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning GBH, while a 60 year old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both are currently in custody.

Police are currently carrying out enquiries, including establishing an exact location where the incident has taken place.

Chief Inspector Steve Barron, Newcastle Area Command, said: "We are currently trying to establish exactly what has happened and where and clarify the circumstances around this incident.

"The 17-year-old is receiving treatment for his injury and is in a stable condition. Overnight we arrested two people in connection with the shooting and they are currently in custody being questioned.

"I know serious incidents such as this do cause concern in the community and we're doing everything we can to ensure they are kept up to date.

"I'd like to reassure people that this is not believed to be a random attack and at this stage it appears that the people involved were known to each other.

"Additional patrols will be taking place in the area and residents should contact us if they have any concerns they want to discuss.
