Two police officers called out because a woman was "distressed" found themselves having to deliver her baby.

The father-to-be called the police in the early hours from work to say his wife was at home in West Norwood, south east-London, in a distressed state.

PC Matt Spence and PC Gill Moriarty went to the scene not knowing a baby was on the way but helped deliver the girl, who has been named Sara.

The father and ambulance service arrived soon after the birth.

PC Moriarty said: "This was not your usual type of call and it was great to play a part in the birth of a new baby girl."

I'm getting a bit fed up with this sort of thing.

Note to the father: There is an organisation in London that deals with MEDICAL stuff. They also have blue lights and sirens, and are not the LAW ENFORCEMENT people.

Whenever we go to this stuff because the LAS can't attend, all we do is leave ourselves open to complaint and criticism.

We are NOT there as a fallback ambulance service, and should stop allowing ourselves to be used as one.

Every time I hear "LAS have no units to send" I fail to understand why we don't just say "Find one then, we have to"

Have you heard about BTP's response to "LAS have no units to send"?

Instead of "Find one then, we have to", it's "We've now got a team of pretend paramedics who respond to medical emergencies on the tube while we wait for LAS."

I'm not making this up.

That's because the Underground doesn't go your way any more. It's different up this way.

As you mentioned it though, I nicked a shoplifter the other day, just my luck she was running out of a dress shop in the West End with the shop owner in hot pursuit, so I couldn't avoid it.

Would the Met come and deal? The CAD message said (and this is verbaim): "You made the arrest, you deal."

Shame we don't have that option.
